Scope of the Disaster
In early August 2024 a sudden collapse of a high‑altitude glacier released a torrent of meltwater that surged down steep valleys in the remote border region between Nepal and China. The flood carried a massive load of mud, rocks and debris, overwhelming narrow mountain roads and destroying homes that were built close to the riverbanks.

Scientists monitoring Himalayan glaciers have warned that rising temperatures increase the risk of such outbursts. The disaster has renewed calls for improved monitoring of glacial lakes and stronger building codes in flood‑prone valleys. Experts suggest that early warning systems, combined with community education on evacuation routes, could reduce casualties in future events.
Researchers at Tribhuvan University are planning a detailed study of the glacier that collapsed, aiming to model potential future outbursts. Their findings could inform regional policies on land use and disaster preparedness.
