Wardogs: A Unique Approach to Marketing
Wardogs, an upcoming large-scale, hardcore FPS inspired by games like Arma, is taking a unique approach to its marketing. In an official video, the developer Bulkhead revealed the game's Steam early access release date as September 10, but also outlined 10 reasons why potential players might not want to buy the game.
These reasons include the lack of early-access content, high early-access price, visual fidelity, and even the failure of Bulkhead's previous shooter, Battalion: 1944. By being upfront about the game's limitations, Bulkhead aims to manage player expectations and build trust with the community.
10 Reasons Not to Buy Wardogs
- Lack of early-access content
- Early-access pricing
- Player count will decline
- Monetization
- Performance and visuals
- Shifting early-access priorities
- Battalion: 1944
- VOIP
- Controller support
- Decisions and consequences
Some of these reasons are self-explanatory, such as the lack of content during the early-access period and the game's price. Wardogs will initially cost $40 in early access, a steep price for some players. The price will increase over the course of development and will eventually sell for $60 at the end of early access.
Other reasons require more explanation. For example, the game's milsim-style gameplay means that death requires a long trek back to the frontlines and rebuying lost equipment. This type of gameplay may not be suitable for all players, and Bulkhead wants to make sure that players are aware of this before buying the game.
Monetization and Future Plans
While Wardogs does not currently have any monetization, such as a battle pass or paid skins, Bulkhead plans to introduce some form of monetization in the future. However, this will not happen during the early-access period, and players will not be able to buy in-game currency or weapon camos. Instead, players will have to earn these items through play.
Bulkhead's decision to be transparent about the game's monetization plans is a departure from the typical AAA marketing approach. By being open and honest about the game's limitations and plans, Bulkhead hopes to build a loyal community of players who are willing to support the game throughout its development.
